Topic Cluster Model

Nowadays, our site needs to be organized according to different main topics, with blog posts about specific, conversational long-tail keywords hyperlinked to one another, to address as many searches as possible about a particular subject.

The way most blogs are currently structured, bloggers and SEOs have worked to create individual blog posts that rank for specific keywords. The result is disorganized, and hard for the user to find the exact information he or she needs. It also results in your own URLs competing against one another in search engine rankings when we produce multiple blog posts about similar topics.

In order to rank in search and best answer the new types of queries searchers are submitting, we should apply the topic cluster model to our blog posts. It would require lots of time to choose the broad topics and to create content based on specific keywords related to that topic that all link to each other. Afterward, the blogs would be arranged better for the reader and it also improves effectively significantly the SEO of the site.

What is Topic Cluster?

Topic Cluster
  • With specific topics surrounded by blog posts related to the topic, connected to other URLs in the cluster via hyperlinks.
  • This architecture consists of three components
    - Pillar page (the center one of a cluster)
    - Cluster page (the surrounding one)
    - Hyperlink (the link between the Pillar page and Cluster page)

WHAT are the relationship between the Pillar page, Cluster page, and the hyperlink?

  • In short, the Pillar page is what Bloggers and SEOs are trying to rank for, it broadly contains a particular primary topic but leaves room for more detail in subsequent by creating more specific pieces of Cluster page linked by hyperlinks.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT A PILAR PAGE?

  • Choose a topic that’s broad enough that it can generate more related blog posts that will serve as cluster content, but not so broad that you can’t cover the entire topic on a single pillar page. ex: “social media” was too broad of a topic, but “Instagram captions” would have been too narrow. “Instagram marketing” is broad enough
